….passing through a local mall, I came across the early signs of Christmas as decorations hung from the ceiling in the great open space above the passing shoppers and children scattered below…

Outside, women in the flower market pick through the floral arrangements in search of the one fitting for their upcoming trek to the cemetery, where a million Filipinos around the country will venture on All Saints and All Souls Days to share in a family feast at the sites of their dearly departed.

Yes, I did say their annual trek to the cemetery for a feast at the grave site of the dearly departed, for judging by the pumpkin alongside the candles on the table it is Halloween, and here in the Philippines All Saints Day and All Souls Day is an annual event that see several thousands of Filipinos spend the day visiting cemeteries around the country. In addition to bringing flowers, food is usually packed and brought along as a tribute “for the dead”, though its usually the live people who consume it, and the departed don’t usually carry pocket change for the pizza…
